During the English portion of the ACT, you’ll have 35 minutes to read several passages of text and answer either 5 or 10 multiple-choice questions for each passage for a total of 50 questions. Unlike the previous version of the ACT, the new ACT has 10 experimental questions embedded into the test passages themselves. 40 of the 50 questions will be scored.
Like the rest of the exam, the English section is divided into two columns. The left-hand column presents a passage of text with phrases or sentences underlined and numbered. These annotations correspond to the questions for the passage, which appear in the right-hand column.
