The following are some additional tips to keep in mind when taking the ACT exam.
- Answer every single question.
- Stick to short and clear answers. The ACT always favors the most concise, clearest option.
- Don’t be afraid of the NO CHANGE option. This makes up at least 25% of all correct answer choices.
- Eliminate those options you know are incorrect first.
- In a two-part or three-part question, quickly eliminate any answer in which one of the items in the pair is incorrect.
- The test will include two-part questions in which you’ll select a set of answers. It can be tricky when one part of the pair is correct but the other demonstrates incorrect usage, especially when it’s a commonly confused word.
- Pay attention to context. If asked about the usage or agreement of words, verbs, and such, read the part immediately before and immediately after the underlined portion.
- Recite an answer inside your head to see if it “sounds” right.
- Skip the questions that deal with whole passages and paragraphs during your first pass; come back to these in a second or third pass.
- Reorder the passages—work on easier to read or interesting passages first.
